Question:
I know that plastic surgery is for both men and women but I still have this notion that getting a tummy tuck is not something a man would do but it is a procedure that I want. What percentage of tummy tucks are done on men? Will there be a noticeable scar afterward?
Answer:
Approximately 10% of all tummy tucks are done on men. The primary reason that more tummy tucks are performed on women is because men do not undergo pregnancies. Part of the problem in abdomens that undergo a tummy tuck procedure is weakness in the abdominal wall muscles that has been caused by the stretching of the abdomen by the enlarged uterus.
Men, however, can also have weakened abdominal muscles and excess skin and fat in the midriff area. A tummy tuck would improve all three of these issues - excess skin, excess fat and weakened abdominal muscles.
The trade off in performing an abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a tummy tuck, is a noticeable scar. However, these scars should not be noticeable when wearing shorts or a bathing suit. The scars are at the level of the pubic hair and run laterally to about the hip bones.
