Question:

What do the "A" and "V" refer to on the Norwood Scale for Hair Loss?

Answer:

The "A" and "V" are used to describe different variants of the common types of male pattern baldness.  The A pattern refers to a patient in whom hair loss in the crown or vertex area has been spared so that there is no vertex or crown balding.  The V refers to a variant in which the vertex does become thin.
