Question:

I am researching fillers and am wondering if Sculptra is FDA approved and is it considered to be a safe treatment?

Answer:

Sculptra is FDA approved for HIV induced lipoatrophy, however, this does not mean that it cannot be used for other indications.  These are, however, what are called off-label indications.  It is quite common in medicine to use treatments, medications or other products in an off-label use.  An example of this is the use of Botox for crow's feet or for forehead wrinkles.  Botox has only been FDA approved for treatment of glabellar frown lines.  Uses in an off-label method are acceptable as long as the patient has been informed of this off-label use.

Sculptra is a safe filler and it has been used for a number of years with a minimal complication rate.  In my practice, I use Sculptra most frequently for the hollows in the temple area and also for facial lipoatrophy in HIV patients.
